It’s hard to stay this close to Palo Duro Canyon and not make it part of your trip. Often called the “Grand Canyon of Texas,” Palo Duro Canyon State Park stretches across thousands of acres of colorful canyon country, with more than 30 miles of trails for hiking, biking and horseback riding.
The Lighthouse Trail is one of the park’s most popular hikes, while the canyon’s many overlooks offer spectacular views without requiring hiking boots.
- Hike the Lighthouse Trail
- Explore the canyon by bike
- Go horseback riding
- Take a scenic drive
- Look for wildlife and native plants
- Enjoy the overlooks
- Catch the TEXAS Outdoor Musical in summer
A little local advice: Check current park conditions before heading out, bring plenty of water, and give yourself more time than you think you’ll need. It’s easy to get distracted by the scenery.
Canyon · Coffee · Art · Shopping · Dinner
Small Town. Big Personality.
Just down the road, Canyon is the kind of town that’s fun to explore without an itinerary. Start around the historic downtown square, where you’ll find local shops, restaurants, coffee and drinks surrounding the beautiful Randall County Courthouse. And don’t leave town without saying hello to Tex Randall, the enormous cowboy statue that’s been watching over Canyon since 1959.
A Few Canyon Favorites
Coffee: Palace Coffee Company — right on the historic square and a good place to start the morning.
Dinner: Mickey’s Place — Italian food and brick-oven pizza just off the square.
Something casual: Feldman’s Wrong Way Diner — a fun local stop for burgers, steaks and classic comfort food.
Drinks & atmosphere: Pondaseta Pizza Company — in the historic Santa Fe Depot, paired with Canyon’s local brewery scene.
